Call For Application: Dubawa Fact-Checking Fellowship 2019

The Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ), through its fact-checking project, DUBAWA, is now accepting applications from professional journalists for its flagship 2019 fellowship program.

The Dubawa Fact-Checking Fellowship aims at providing an opportunity for five (5) analytical, daring, dedicated and innovative journalists to research and write truth-based and factual stories; and also to institute a culture of fact-checking in newsrooms across Nigeria.

The Fellowship is inspired by the need to tackle the societal menace of mis- and dis-information in Nigeria and beyond, thereby creating a safer media ecosystem where truth and accuracy can thrive without jeopardizing freedom of expression.

Supported by Heinrich Boll Stiftung Foundation, the Fellowship offers a monthly stipend of N100,000 to cover all costs of the investigation.

The 6-month, highly competitive Fellowship is open to all Nigerian journalists with a strong track record of publications, working in any newsroom with significant national and online reach. We seek applications from candidates interested in pursuing stories that border on politics, economy, health, security; or any such matters that are in the interest of the public. The applicant must also provide proof of approval from their newsroom that authorizes the applicant to undertake fact-checking work and an assurance that fact-checks will be widely circulated on their media platform and published on Dubawa’s website as well.

Applicants must not have done fact-checking work before, however, we will give special consideration to journalists who:

    • Demonstrate an interest in and commitment to fact-checking and verification
    • Can demonstrate that fact-checking and verification is a new and important field of journalism necessary for effecting policy changes in Nigeria
    • Are women and/or journalists from diverse backgrounds
    • Can and are willing to learn how to conduct data journalism and investigative journalism
    • Can and are willing to deliver an average of at least three stories per month
