I don’t own the FaroukLawan01 twitter account, Farouk Lawan

Embattled lawmaker, Farouk Lawan, has denounced the twitter handle @FaroukLawan01, which has been posting messages on his behalf.

Mr. Lawan, in a telephone interview with Premium Times, stated that he knows nothing about the twitter account and had not authorised anyone to operate it for him.

“I know nothing about it (the twitter account). It is an impersonation,” Mr. Lawan said.

The account which has been on since the scandal commenced has been used to send tweets which are favourable to the lawmaker.

On Monday, the account claiming to be Mr. Lawan’s, tweeted the lawmaker’s readiness to appear before anticorruption agencies over the bribery allegation.

“I am pleased to inform you that the ICPC has served me notice on the bribery allegation against me,” the account stated saying “as I did with the Police Special Task Force, I am ready to submit myself to the ICPC to aid in their investigation.”

On Tuesday, after Femi Otedola -the businessman from whom Mr. Lawan allegedly collected $620,000 bribe- appeared before the house and refused to make any statement, the twitter account described Mr. Otedola’s actions as ‘falsehood.’

“It is getting interesting by the minutes but falsehood can never be covered for too long,” it tweeted.

The lawmaker, who said he had been questioned by interested Nigerians over comments by the account, however denied owning or having knowledge of the ownership of the twitter handle.

“People have been asking me about the account, but I don’t know anything about it,” he said.

Twitter allows anyone with an email account to open a twitter account / handle with any other persons name.
